As a former Black Hills resident, I’ve done my fair share of hiking. Based on my experience, Spearfish Canyon has the best trails and views to offer.
The best part about Spearfish Canyon is its close proximity to town. You don’t have to travel far to find a great hiking trail, plus, on the way, you will take in the breathtaking views that scenic Hwy. 14 has to offer.
11th Hour Gulch is a hidden gem only traversed by the locals. It is located near mile marker 20, however, it is not marked, so pay close attention or you’ll drive right past it. There is a nice place to park along the side of the road. Park there and hike back up the road a little ways — be on the lookout for two huge stone walls split by a narrow gap of debris.
