Note: This post only applies to Facebook page managers.
As a social media marketer I know a thing or two about the true value of Facebook business pages and its advertising platform. My expertise comes from having managed and set up dozens of pages.
I’ll be one of the first to admit that the Timeline update for pages will drastically change the way people interact with a business on Facebook.
New features to the advertising platform will allow pages to promote certain posts. Timeline also lets pages show their artistic side by giving them a cover photo and allowing them more control over how their apps and posts appear.
That being said I think there is one benefit to Timeline for pages that stands out above the rest. That change is the ability to customize the look of the apps. Let me show you what I mean with a series of screenshots.
1) As you can see here the first step is to go into the page settings and click on the apps tab.
2) The second step is to click on the app you would like to edit. The stock Facebook apps (e.g. Photos, Videos, Notes, etc.) are much less customizable than the ones you have installed.
Click the change custom tab image button.
3) Before the Timeline update you were only able to change the name of the app. Now you will notice that the app image can be pulled from a file on your computer.
4) I already had the replacement image saved on my computer. In this example I am uploading a screen capture of Vimeo’s video preview.
This final screenshot shows the finished result after uploading new images for all the apps I’ve downloaded to the page. Notice that the apps are much more visually stimulating than before the Timeline to pages update.
If you manage a page, your first agendas should be to preview the new Timeline feature. Then you will be able to upload a cover photo and edit the applications before publishing the finished product.
