3 steps to successfully submit your podcast to iTunes

Submitting your podcast to iTunes can be confusing if you’ve never done it before.

In the past week I have successfully submitted two of them. I was a first-timer, so I know exactly what information you are looking for and what questions you need answered.

Below, I have listed three basic best practices to get the podcast you spent hours perfecting, on iTunes, for all the world to see.

1) Make sure your MP3 files are hosted online.

In order to submit your podcast to iTunes, you will need an RSS feed. For most websites, your RSS feed will look something like this:

http://examplewebsite.com/feed/

2) Edit your RSS feed in FeedBurner

FeedBurner is a Google product that lets you edit the details of your RSS feed including things like: artwork image, author, categories (up to three), description, tags, etc.

Make sure you edit these details and the vanity URL — it will look something like this when you’re finished.

Note: You must have a Google account in order to use FeedBurner.

3) Submitting the RSS to iTunes

Launch the iTunes app and click on “Store” then “Home” in the menu bar.

Next, find the Podcast button. You will be directed to a new page within the iTunes store. In the right-hand sidebar click the “Submit a Podcast” button. Enter your FeedBurner address — the feed should be accepted if you did everything right.

It takes a day or two for Apple to access your feed. You will get an email notification once the feed has been accepted or rejected.

Let me be clear — this is NOT the only method for getting your podcast in the iTunes store. This is the way that I have found success doing it, but by no means is it the only way.

I hope this step-by-step tutorial has helped clear up the iTunes podcast submission process. If you found this tip helpful, please share it on the social network of your choice.
